Thank you Ruth Bader Ginsburg!

A pioneer in the fight for gender equality

It's been almost two weeks since the sad news of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's passing at age 87. She had been appointed by President Bill Clinton as Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, and she was the second woman in history to hold this position.

She graduated from Harvard University, which she attended with her husband Martin Ginsburg, as one of the best of her class despite all the obstacles she had to overcome simply because she was a woman. In 1972, she founded the women's rights section in the American Civil Liberties Union, where she began the legal battle for gender equality. She argued six gender discrimination cases before the Supreme Court and won five.

Ginsburg was one of the leading voices of the liberal wing of the Supreme Court, and during her years as a member, she supported abortion rights, the value of looking to international law, and the rights of homosexuals. She was also the one who gave women the right to obtain a mortgage and credit card without a man's “permission”, the right to have children and to continue working and having a job without being discriminated against by gender.

A pop culture icon, she received the nickname Notorious R.G.B in reference to the renowned rapper Notorious B.I.G. She is still popularly regarded as a sign of social justice.

“Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherish colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her: a tireless and resolute champion of justice," Chief Justice John Roberts said.
