The real story behind Cumberbatch’s new movie

Dominic Cooke's new film debuted this year at Sundance Film Festival earning high praise. It is based on the true story of an English businessman named Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) who was recruited as a spy during the Cold War by a CIA agent (Rachel Bosnahan) because of his frequent trips to Russia.

Cumberbatch allies with a Soviet officer named Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) to provide crucial information that could help prevent a nuclear conflict and therefore, end the well-known Cuban Missile Crisis.

Greville Wynne was arrested by the KGB in 1962 and sentenced to 8 years in prison in Lubyanka. During that time, he struggled with several health problems until he was finally released in 1964 when governments agreed to an exchange for the Soviet spy Konon Molody.

A superb cast

The performances in this espionage thriller of one of the most recognized international historical conflicts are very promising.

Cumberbatch was nominated for an Oscar in 2015 for his work on The Imitation Game and we've also seen him in The Current War, 2017. On the other hand, Rachel Bosnahan has participated in the House of Cards series, in the movie Beautiful Creatures (2013) and in the renowned character of the series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (2017) which earned her two Golden Globe awards and an Emmy, among others.
