Thomas Edison: inventor as a trade

The Current War recreates part of the life of this exceptional man

Thomas Edison has a well-deserved recognition at theaters. This American genius will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the film The Current War.

As it happens many times to exceptional beings, he wasn’t successful in academic terms. At eight, his teacher described him as "sterile and unproductive," so his mother took charge of his education.

At twelve, he sold newspapers on a train and exchanged the profits for science books. He was already an avid reader, but he did not stay in theory: he improvised a laboratory in an empty train carriage. It all started there.

Being of the most famous and prolific inventors in the world, Edison died in 1931 at age 84. He left a succession of inventions that changed the lives of men and women around the world, and made electric light, music recording and movies possible.

The Current War

The film directed by Alfonso Gómez-Rejón captures the epic competition between Edison and another electricity giant, George Westinghouse (played by Michael Shannon). They wanted to create a sustainable system to illuminate the world and sell it in the US. Do not miss it!
