The soundtrack of C'mon C'mon

The power of the music in a film

Music is an essential resource to tell a story. A song in a film has the ability to convey a situation, an emotional state, or a way to identify a character.

In the case of C'mon C'mon, the soundtrack was in the hands of the twins Bryce and Aaron Dessner, members of the band The National. Bryce Dessner is a great classical composer and has collaborated with important figures such as Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet, as well as being involved in various projects at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Barbican Center in London. On the other hand, Aaron Brooking Dessner is an American musician, composer, and producer. He is also the co-founder of the indie rock duo Big Red Machine, along with Bon Iver.

The Dessner brothers created an album consisting of thirteen tracks and four of them were in collaboration with Leslie Feist, a Canadian singer-songwriter. The music is designed to accompany the story of a radio journalist who must take care of his young nephew because of family reasons. Starring Joaquin Phoenix (Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot), the film delves into the life-changing relationship of the main characters as they travel across the country. It is a film that explores an autobiographical aspect of the director’s life, Mike Mills, and the bond with his son.

"Aaron and Bryce often work in a very subtle, minimalist, and gossamer kind of style," said the director in a press release, where he also expressed, "We went through a long process filled with exploring places that ultimately didn't work, but we had to find this gentle sound, this particular melody and set of chords that really holds the specific emotional world, the energy of the music becomes gentle, cloud-like, intimate."

The first preview of C'mon C'mon was I Won't Remember? and, like the rest of the soundtrack, it's a soothing, subtle melody that accompanies this wonderful and moving story.
