Ben is Back: what do the critics say?

The verdict of the critics is unanimous

That film critics give a really warm unanimous welcome to a film is something out of the ordinary.

But that is what happens with the new film by Peter Hedges, Ben is Back, starring his own son, Lucas Hedges, and nothing less than the undisputed cinema icon, Julia Roberts.

After receiving a great ovation at its premiere in Toronto, Hollywood Reporter said: "Julia Roberts, at age 50, is in one of her best roles, and she gives one of her best performance as a mother whose son has caused a terrible pain and knows that it is a time bomb, but she cannot avoid wanting to be with him and protect him."

The Screen Daily website added: "director Peter Hedges has great potential for the kind of drama that reveals everything about a damaged family."

While on Deadline's website you can read: "It's a fascinating and powerful film about a family in crisis because of the hell unleashed by the return of an addicted son".

The most acute minds in the industry already speculate with the possibility of Oscar nominations for this film that offers a unique look at the unpredictable beast a family can become.
