Films to reflect on health

Today is World Health Day!

Today we reflect on the importance of health through different films. These movies tell stories that go beyond the big screen and bring to the forefront different issues related to people’s well-being. The seventh art can start a conversation about the importance of health care, both physical and mental.

Breathe: the film tells the story of Robin Cavendish, who has his whole life ahead of him when he is paralyzed by polio while in Africa. Despite all advice, Diana (Robin's wife) gets him out of the hospital and takes him home where her devotion and determination transcend his disability. Together they refuse to be confined by their suffering and they dazzle everyone with their humor, bravery, and lust for life.

Tully: the film follows Marlo, who has always done everything on her own but begins to falter with the arrival of her third child. When she finally gives in and hires an energetic, free-spirited babysitter for the nights, Tully, she discovers a side of herself that had been dormant and is now beginning to emerge. The film explores the inner struggle of the protagonist who, in addition to raising her baby and two other children, must also cope with the depression she experiences daily.

Still Alice: the film tells the story of Alice Howland, a happily married woman with three grown children. She is a renowned linguistics professor who begins to forget words. A devastating diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's tests her relationship with her family. Her struggle to stay connected to the person she once was is heartbreaking and poignant.
