The Greatest of Cinema: Ridley Scott

Let’s take a look at the director's highest-grossing films

Ridley Scott is a film director, producer, and screenwriter who was born on November 30, 1937, in England. From an early age, he showed an interest in science fiction: he read H.G. Wells’ novels and watched films such as Them! (1954), The Day the Earth Stay Stood (1951), and Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).

Considered a cinema visionary, some of his first films were The Duelists, Alien, and Blade Runner, which offer unforgettable scenes due to the actors, specific script details, and the atmosphere itself. He is a filmmaker who stands out for his concentrated and atmospheric visual style, a style that earned him three Oscar nominations in the Best Director category.

Let's take a look at his highest-grossing films:

Alien (1979): a horror film with slasher touches, a cult story, and a unique leading role for Sigourney Weaver (A Monster Calls). The film explores the terrible consequences suffered by the crew of a spaceship when they make an emergency stop and are attacked by an alien. The film grossed 201 million dollars.

Gladiator (2000): after several box-office failures, this film was a rebirth in the director's career. With a production that went through many difficulties, Gladiator hit theaters, became a classic, and was the second highest grossing film of 2000 with a worldwide gross of 460 million dollars.

The Martian (2015): this science fiction film starring Matt Damon narrates the difficult rescue carried out by NASA to bring back home an astronaut who has been trapped on Mars and must figure out how to survive on a lifeless planet. The film was critically acclaimed and the tenth highest-grossing film of 2015.

Another of his most successful films, which received several Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, was All the Money in the World. Starring Michelle Williams, Mark Wahlberg, and Christopher Plummer, the film tells the story of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III and his mother Gail's desperate attempt to convince his billionaire grandfather Jean Paul Getty to pay the ransom. With her son's life at risk, Gail and Getty's advisor become allies in a race against time that will ultimately reveal the true and lasting value of love over money.
