Alicia Vikander: a multifaceted actress

She learnt Japanese to play a character

Her mother tongue is Swedish since she was born in Sweden on October 3, 1988. Her second language is English, which is necessary for her acting career. But she had already learned Danish for another role (A royal affair, 2012).

When she decided to be part of the film Earthquake Bird, she knew that she had a very important professional challenge ahead as she had to learn Japanese to play the character of Lucy Fly.

In an interview, Vikander said that she had an acting coach and a language coach, since one of the great challenges was that the way of expressing what is said in English is usually different from that of the Japanese culture, so adjustments were constantly required in terms of communication tone, gestures, among others. Therefore, there were many changes to the script, including on the day of filming. "I had seven to ten scenes where I had to speak Japanese and what I did was learn every word by heart," she says.

The actress had already visited Japan a few years ago and always wanted to go back as she finds the culture of that country fascinating. "Having the opportunity to return not only to shoot a movie but also to learn their language and work with natives -75-80% of the team were local- was a once in a lifetime experience."

Her next performance will be in English

We’ll see her shine in the role of Lady / Essel in The Green Knight, along with Gawain (Dev Patel).
