The Greatest of Cinema: Quentin Tarantino

Let’s review his amazing trajectory

Quentin Tarantino is an American director, producer, and screenwriter who was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 27, 1963. From an early age, he was exposed to a wide variety of film influences and popular culture. One of his first jobs was at a video store in Manhattan Beach where he met other film enthusiasts, but also recommended films to customers and talked about the seventh art.

His career began in the late 1980s when he wrote and directed a short film. He stood out as an independent filmmaker in 1992 with the release of Reservoir Dogs, which was considered the greatest independent film of all time.

What are the characteristics of Quentin Tarantino’s films? His films are characterized by the use of violence, a non-linear narration, and a mix of different film genres. They also stand out for their mise-en-scène, as he uses the camera as a great narrative resource.

-  Big wide shots: to show a specific character concerning his or her surroundings or when he wants the audience to appreciate the whole scene.

- Music: is one of the most important resources in his films. He uses it to create a mood or a certain tone for the story he wants to tell. He also often chooses songs that are not so common or that may contrast with the scene.

- Structuring the film into chapters and intertitles: most of Tarantino's films feature stories that are not told in chronological order. On the contrary, he resorts to flashbacks to go deeper into the characters or to know the reason for their actions. He also uses time jumps to show an important event.

One of Quentin Tarantino's latest blockbuster films is The Hateful Eight, a film set six or seven years after the Civil War where a stagecoach hurtles through the Wyoming winter. Bounty hunter John Ruth and his fugitive Daisy Domergue, venture to the town of Red Rock where he will bring Domergue to justice. Along the way, they encounter two strangers and seek shelter at Minnie's haberdashery, a mountain stagecoach stop, but when they arrive they are greeted not by the owner but by four unfamiliar faces. This film, like many others in his filmography, presents several of the characteristics that so identify this amazing film director.
