The 355: a film inspired by a female spy

A female agent who changed U.S. history is the inspiration for Simon Kinberg's new film.

One of the big releases of 2022 is The 355 directed by Simon Kinberg, producer of Deadpool and Fantastic Four. This time we are going to see a group of women who make up one of the most prestigious spy units in the world. Each one of them works individually, but they must join forces to confront an invisible enemy and prevent a weapon of mass destruction from ending up in the wrong hands.

The film's title is based on one of America's first female spies. Even though some historians question her existence, she is believed to have changed the course of the Revolutionary War. Agent 355 was part of a top-secret spy ring called The Culper Ring. Led by George Washington, they created a complex encrypted system to transmit codes with valuable information, used clothing to send signals, and crossed behind enemy lines. Each member of this network risked their lives for the American Revolution.

The true identity of this brave woman remains a mystery to this day. However, her actions remained in history as she stood out for her great ability to gain access to British commanders. Some research reveals that she was from a British Loyalist family which allowed her to sneak past the enemy. She is believed to have exposed the treachery of a member of the American army, Benedict Arnold, and she possibly participated in the arrest of John André, a high-ranking member of the British army.

The myth of this female figure is the inspiration for the film starring Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game), Penelope CruzLupita Nyong'oDiane Kruger and Fan Bing-bing. A powerful cast to portray female agents who join forces with a single goal: to save civilians from imminent danger.
