The Greatest of Cinema: Sofia Coppola

A look at the career of this great filmmaker

Sofia Coppola is an American director, screenwriter, producer and actress who was born in New York in 1971. Daughter of film director Francis Ford Coppola, she studied at Mills College and the California Institute of the Arts. After dropping out of college and creating a clothing line called Milkfed, Sofia Coppola ventured into the world of the seventh art.

Although it was her first time as a film director, she was no stranger to that universe. From a very early age, she participated in The Godfather trilogy: she appears in the baptism scene in the first film, she played an immigrant girl in the second film, and in the last installment, she surprised the audience with her role as Mary Corleone, daughter of Michael Corleone and Kay Adams.

Let's take a look at some of her highest-grossing titles:

The Virgin Suicides: the film begins with a shocking event as thirteen-year-old Cecilia Lisbon attempts suicide. This event changes the lifestyle of the family, who isolates their daughters from the rest of the world to protect them. The story is told from the point of view of the neighborhood kids, who become obsessed with these mysterious women and want to help them.

Lost in Translation: starring Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray, the film tells the story of Bob and Charlotte, who find themselves in Tokyo, feel lonely and decide to be friends. It is one of the director's most successful films and it also earned her international recognition.

The Bling Ring: based on a true story, the film follows a group of young people and their particular mission: to steal from Hollywood celebrities. It is a film with an incredible cast that includes Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga and Leslie Mann.

Marie Antoinette: Sofia Coppola surprises audiences once again with the famous phrase "Let them eat cake." This time, together with Kirsten Dunst, she takes us back to the 18th century to tell the story of the famous Marie Antoinette, from her engagement to Louis XVI, her reign as a young woman, and her unfortunate outcome.
