Gijon International Film Festival: a digital and in-person plan

One of the most important film events in Spain is back!

Gijon/Xión International Film Festival took place a week ago with the aim of keeping a mixed modality: continuing with the digital extension FICX.TV while at the same time going back to movie theaters to regain the excitement of the face-to-face encounter with the seventh art. The main goal of the 59th edition was to become an active agent in the circulation of films that are usually not commercially distributed. Several courses, workshops, talks, meetings with directors, daily concerts and parties with live music also took place during the festival.

The history of this festival dates back to the early sixties when it began as an initiative by Isaac del Rivero, cartoonist and publicist, who directed it for the first nineteen years. This is an event that from the first moment seeks to offer a wide variety of indie films from different parts of the world, but specially focusing on emerging cinema.

The film that opened this edition of the Gijon International Film Festival was C’mon C’mon by Mike Mills, director of Beginners (2010) and 20th Century Women (2016). Joaquin Phoenix (Don’t Worry, He won’t get far on Foot), who returns to the big screen after his role as the Joker, portrays a radio journalist who – due to family reasons- must take care of his young nephew while they embark on a trip across the United States. This road movie is shot in black and white and will hit theaters in 2022 in Latin America.
