Traveling with Diamond: No escape

Let's take a short getaway to Southeast Asia

Today we’ll take a tour of Southeast Asia in Traveling with Diamond. The inspiration behind this adventure is the film No Escape, a captivating action thriller that tells the story of an American businessman who moves to Southeast Asia with his family. Immediately after settling into their new home they find themselves amidst a violent coup d'état and are forced to find a safe escape as rebels ruthlessly attack the city.

Directed by John Erick Dowdle and written with his brother Drew, the film was shot in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is a country with incredible architecture, countless Buddhist temples in different corners of Thailand, and different works of art influenced by Indian epics. Its cuisine is also very important, as it is considered one of the most popular in the world. Thai food stands out for combining five main flavors: sweet, salty, spicy, sour, and bitter.

The producers had a lot of options where they could have filmed this story but chose Thailand because it is proof of the skills of Thai crews and the resources of the place. However, at the time of release, it was decided not to mention the city or country where the fictional events take place so that it would not be a negative portrayal of Thailand nor a connection to the political conflicts in the film. To avoid recognizing the location, the production carefully checked that none of the signs were in Thai and that most of the language spoken by the native population was a combination of Laotian, hill tribe, and other languages. Nor were any images of the Thai monarchy or any elements related to the Buddhist religion used.

No Escape - starring Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan, and Lake Bell-, is an action film that will make you feel restless throughout the story and keep you captivated until the very last minute.
