UN French Language Day

A special day to celebrate the French language

Today is UN French Language Day! This event commemorates one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

This initiative, which consists of dedicating a day to each language of the UN, was accepted in 2010 as a way to celebrate cultural diversity and multilingualism and to highlight the culture and history linked to each language.

To continue with the intention of this particular date, let’s revisit two films that are spoken in French or refer to the place, history, and culture of France:

Petit Maman: the film directed by Céline Sciamma follows Nelly, who has just lost her grandmother and is helping her parents clean out her mother's childhood home. One day she meets a girl her age and they build a tree house as they forge an incredible friendship.

Les Misérables: starring Damien Bonnard, Alexis Manent, and Djibril Zonga, the film tells the story of Stéphane, who joins the Montfermeil Brigade, a suburb east of Paris. There he meets his new colleagues, Chris and Gwada, two agents with experience in the enormous tensions between the different organized groups for the control of the neighborhood. The three of them will fight and try to restore order to the area.

Stay tuned!
