A chronicle of Max Perkins's time as the book editor at Scribner, where he oversaw works by Tom Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and others.

Max and Tom then start work on the editing of the manuscript. Max tells Tom he feels there are as many as 300 pages to be edited and cut to preserve the story. Tom is concerned but accepts Max’s help and so the editing begins. Max takes Tom back to New Canaan to have supper with his family and we see just how much of a fish out of water he is but also just how close a bond has started to develop between these two men. Max informs them all at supper that he is starting on his next book “Of Time and the River”. He says it will be even greater in scale than “O Lost” and deal with his autobiographical fictional character Eugene Gant’s journey to adulthood and the influence of his father. Tom’s energy is a new rich drug to the house and the girls are all enamored of him but Louise starts to feel jealous of the obvious bond between her husband and this man. Tom stays at the house overnight and then travels back into Manhattan with Max in the morning saying that Max has become the dearest friend to him.
